It may sound incredible to our modern ears, but there was a time, with its heyday in the late 1950s to 1960s, when the seas about Europe were speckled with converted mine-sweepers, liberty ships, fishing trawlers and even abandoned anti-aircraft installations that were topped with radio antennae and bore a bevy of true-believer deejays with the common mission of bringing to the peoples of Western Europe the music of the day's youth, in exactly the same manner that the Voice of America was broadcasting to the peoples of Eastern Europe. At the time, even the liberal democracies of Europe had rigid playlists and content policies that prevented many of their listening audience, especially the kids amongst them, from hearing the music they wanted to hear or to hear it whenever they wanted. Starting variously around the Vik, and especially off the coast of Holland, where there were broadcasts emanating from houseboats with signals that sometimes covered only a single town or city, soon inspired enthusiasts and corporate ventures alike took to the seas to broadcast content that the red tape and institutional resistance of state sponsored ventures like the BBC wouldn't permit, but which entrepeneurs whose commercial use of that content made a viable business venture out of it would.

DISC ONE

VOLUME ONE: "WONDERFUL RADIO LONDON"
The U.K.'s Most Popular Top 40 Station Of The Swinging '60's! Over 55 Hours Packed Into 134 MP3s On 1 DVD!

Many from outside of Europe who are familiar with the music of the 1960s may know that the rock group "The Who" released an album in 1967 entitled "The Who Sell Out", considered by many to be rock's first true "concept album", and centered around the broadcast format of a individual commercial radio station. With pop songs (performed by "The Who") which made up their playlist, punctuated with advertisements for various products targeting young people filling in the space between, the station is identified by various "jingles" throughout the album as "Wonderful Radio London". What many non-Europeans may not know is that this was a real radio station and these were its actual jingles. Forced off the air by an act of Parliament during the "Summer of Love" of 1967, this album served both as an epitaph for a truly great station and for the end of the cultural phenomenon that were "The Pirates" of U.K. radio.

VOLUME TWO: RADIO CAROLINE
The Very First Of The U.K.'s Pirate Top 40 Stations Playing Your Favorite Hits Of The Swinging '60's! Over 97 Hours Packed Into 222 MP3s On 1 DVD!

On Easter Sunday, March 28, 1964, beginning with the words "This is Radio Caroline on 199, your all day music station!" segued to the strains of the Rolling Stones' "Not Fade Away", the hey-day of U.K. pirate radio was born. The station was named after the daughter of America's first president of Irish ancestry, Caroline Kennedy, by its owner, the Irish entrepeneur Ronan O'Rahilly, who prior to this venture had briefly managed the Rolling Stones and Georgie Fame, and suggested the band name for his protegé's The Animals (he was to briefly manage the Beatles in later years as well). Having seen a photograph of Caroline gaily dancing about the White House's Oval Office in sharp contrast to the office's gravitas and tradition, he felt that this was what he wanted his station to be in the face of the staid broadcasting standards of the day. Hoisted to instant popularity by a galaxy of deejay stars including radio greats "Murph The Surf" Jim Murphy, Jack Spector of WMCA New York fame, The Great Emperor Rosko, Tony Blackburn, Don Allen, Johnny Walker, Keith Hampshire & more, the station set the standards by which all later U.K. pirates were judged. They also uniquely chose to continue broadcasting after the Marine Offences Bill of 1967 criminalized their enterprise, and continued to do so for decades -- and even now, Radio Caroline still broadcasts, but via satellite, while tied to or traveling between its various moorings on the Thames river.

DISC TWO

VOLUME THREE: RNI RADIO NORDSEE INTERNATIONAL!
The 1970-74 Pirate That Defied Jamming, Hijacking & Firebombing To Give Airplay To The Music Of The Day! Over 121 Hours Packed Into 159 MP3ss on 1 DVD!

In the summer of 1973, I spent an afternoon "DX-ing", which is the tuning in to the otherwise staticy space between local radio stations and turning up the volume in order to hear weak and distant signals. With a little patience and a little time one would eventually find something interesting - a country music station way out west from our home in Edison, New Jersey, exciting popular music stations from up and down the U.S. east coast, and always and ever, southern bible-belt preachers. This afternoon, however, one could hear with very little difficulty at all "This is Radio Nordsee International" - a station clear across the world! The announcer explained that they were broadcasting from a ship in the North Sea and solicited his audience to call or write Radio Nordsee to let them know if they were picking up their signal - and then went on to say that to their great surprise they were getting telephone calls at their main office in Switzerland from the United States saying that they were being listened to from there at that very moment. I couldn't believe it - a station on a ship in a foreign sea was reporting that Americans were listening to them half a world away, and here I was one of those very listeners hearing about it! Could this really be real? I asked my Dad about it later, a man of some experience with radio himself, and he said, it sounded cooked up, probably some local yokels fooling around with a transmitter. It wasn't until 30 years later when I heard these recordings that I learned how very real and genuine that entire experience was - as will you when you are asked if you can hear the signal of Radio Nordsee International from their ship upon the 1970s North Sea - and if the spectacles of multi-government jammming, the attempted high-seas piracy of the ship by business executive Kees Manders or the firebombing attack waged against them by competitor Radio Veronica doesn't entice you to listen herein for all the details, what possibly could?!? You won't regret the decision to "DX" in!

Taking his cue from the success of Radio Caroline, the legendary founder of the UK's Monster Raving Loony Party, David "Screaming" Lord Sutch, pioneered the nation's pirate "radio fort" phenomenon when he took over the World War II anti-aircraft army fort at Shivering Sands in the midst of the Thames estuary in May of 1964 and began broacasting the rock & roll hits of the day. The British Navy really didn't like it, and turned up in force once off the Shivering Sands fort in an effort to scare him & his compatriots off. It didn't work, and soon all the remaining UK maritime army forts were taken over and pressed into service as privatized unregulated radio stations. Meanwhile, entrepeneurs and true believers in this kind of radio were taking to the sea in numbers about the island nation, and soon even the Americans, seeing big dollar signs, sent their own Britain Radio & Swinging Radio England in the same ship across the pond to get a piece of the commercial action. This time in the history of radio broadcast was heady and epic, surely the most unusual and interesting passage in the entire history of commercial radio, and this MP3 DVD serves as a testament to these wild & wonderful days that were the UK pirates.

* A Message From J. C. Kaelin About MediaOutlet.com's Titles:

Don't be fooled by cheap imitations! I personally digitized all the titles sold on this website, sourced from my famed personal archives of over 8,000 hours of historical moving image footage, and countless hours of archival audio source media, which have been used in many tv/movie/radio productions to my credit, many years before copycat competitors degraded their quality and compressed them onto bargain basement disc stock, labeled with magic marker, shoved into paper sleeves, and sold on their websites represented as their own. These are ***the original digitally remastered recordings*** that you deserve when you make your purchase, manufactured using 100+ year guaranteed Taiyo Yuden brand discs that are the world's highest quality disc stock, and like all our discs, they're printed and shipped with j-cards in durable shatterproof jewel cases. So when you buy this title, you'll know you're getting *the genuine article*, and that you'll enjoy it for a lifetime! And most importantly, when you purchase MediaOutlet.com products, you help us to keep bringing you and the rest of the world the best in rare and classic multimedia entertainment! With our archival quality DVD titles, you have the security of knowing that the media you treasure is safe and sound in your own library, and not subject to disappearance as are those archived on the internet or elsewhere!

And remember:
