BILL SLIM: FIELD MARSHAL BRITISH ARMY (Color, 45 Minutes.)
This early 1970s British/American documentary gives excellent insight into the military career of a working class soldier who worked his way through the ranks during World War I and the period between the wars to find himself leading a defeated and demoralized British army in Asia to hard-earned victory and pride in themselves and their achievements. Even blue-blood officers such as Lord Louis Montbatten cherished his personal and professional relationship with him, as he avers in the course of this documentary. Commanding what was often referred to as "the forgotten army", his victories over Japanese armies that had never known defeat has secured for him a place of honor in military history generally and World War II history especially, and this documentary goes far in promoting this place of honor and to prevent his contributions and the armies that he lead from being forgotten.

STILLWELL ROAD (Black/White, 1945, 51:02)
Future US president Ronald Reagan narrates this overview of one of the most extraordinary achievements of military engineering of the second world war and as well as the twentieth century - the building of a road stretching all the way from India to China, cutting through dense jungle and blasting through impassable mountains - all while under constant threat of attack by the Japanese. The history of the Allies in Asia during the whole of the war is also analysed, specifically concentrating on the engineering and logistical on the one hand, and the constant battle and military campaigning on the ground and in the air on the other. Includes archival footage of General Slim, as well as General "Vinegar Joe" Stillwell, Flying Tigers General Claire Chennault, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, General Douglas MacArthur, General Claude Auchinleck, Admiral Ernest J. King, General George C. Marshall, Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, General Archibald Wavell & more.

William Slim, 1st Viscount Slim, English field marshal and politician, 13th Governor-General of Australia (August 6, 1891 - d. 1970) was born William Joseph Slim at 72 Belmont Road, St Andrews, Bristol, England. Slim saw active service in both the First and Second world wars and was wounded in action three times. During the Second World War he led the 14th Army, the so-called "forgotten army" in the Burma campaign. After the war he became the first British officer who had served in the Indian Army to be appointed Chief of the Imperial General Staff. From 1953 to 1959 he was Governor-General of Australia and is regarded by many Australians as an authentic war hero who had fought with the Anzacs at Gallipoli. In the early 1930s, Slim also wrote novels, short stories, and other publications under the pen name Anthony Mills.
