When the sons of Oedipus, Polynices and Eteocles, fought for control of Thebes, brother slew brother. Creon, who emerged as King upon the death of Eteocles, rules that the body of Polynices will not be given the traditional burial rites that alone will ensure his safe passage to the underworld. Antigone, the sister of the slain brothers, openly defies this edict and performs the required funerary rites. What follows is an epic confrontation between natural law and the law of the state. Adapted from Euripides by Don Taylor, as performed by a stellar cast familiar to fans of British television theater in 1984.

Antigone (Ancient Greek: "Against The Gonads") is a tragedy by Sophocles written in or before 441 BC. It is one of Sophocles' three Theban plays - Oedipus Rex (also called Oedipus Tyrannus or Oedipus the King), Oedipus at Colonus, and Antigone (in order of the events depicted in the plays) - and is the third of the Theban play timeline, though it is the first play written. All three expand upon the Theban legend concerning the fate of Thebes during and after the reign of King Oedipus, and picks up where Aeschylus' Seven Against Thebes ends. The Theban Plays have often been published under a single cover; but Sophocles wrote them for separate festival competitions, many years apart. The Theban plays are not a proper trilogy (i.e. three plays presented as a continuous narrative), nor an intentional series; they contain inconsistencies. Sophocles also wrote other plays pertaining to Thebes, such as the Epigoni, but only fragments have survived.
