On March 31, 1957, 107 million people in the United States, fully 60% of the country's population, tuned in to see this live broadcast on the CBS television network, who had decided that they wanted to create a Broadway-style musical that could be seen in every living room in America. They invited the famous team of Rodgers and Hammerstein, who were synonymous with Broadway musicals at the time, to write a musical especially for television based on the story of Cinderella by French author Charles Perrault (who also wrote The Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, Puss in Boots and Bluebeard). Cinderella is the only musical Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote for television, and they wrote it specifically as a vehicle for Julie Andrews, who played the title role. As Richard Rodgers wrote in his autobiography, "What sold us immediately was the chance to work with Julie." The resulting enormous audience for this production, the largest for any single theatrical performance up till that date, caused Rodgers to muse that it would have taken 110 years of performances for Cinderella to have received as large an audience in a Broadway theater as it did on that single night (Black/White, 1957, 1 Hour 17 Minutes.).

"Cinderella", or "The Little Glass Slipper", is a folk tale about oppression and triumphant reward. Thousands of variants are known throughout the world. The protagonist is a young woman living in forsaken circumstances that are suddenly changed to remarkable fortune, with her ascension to the throne via marriage. The story of Rhodopis, recounted by the Greek geographer Strabo sometime between around 7 BC and AD 23, about a Greek slave girl who marries the king of Egypt, is usually considered to be the earliest known variant of the Cinderella story. The first literary European version of the story was published in Italy by Giambattista Basile in his Pentamerone in 1634; the version that is now most widely known in the English-speaking world was published in French by Charles Perrault in Histoires ou contes du temps passe in 1697. Another version was later published by the Brothers Grimm in their folk tale collection Grimms' Fairy Tales in 1812. Although the story's title and main character's name change in different languages, in English-language folklore Cinderella is an archetypal name. The word Cinderella has, by analogy, come to mean one whose attributes were unrecognized: one who unexpectedly achieves recognition or success after a period of obscurity and neglect. The still-popular story of Cinderella continues to influence popular culture internationally, lending plot elements, allusions, and tropes to a wide variety of media. The Aarne-Thompson-Uther Index (ATU Index), a catalogue of folktale types used in folklore studies, classifies Cinderella as Tale Type 510A, Persecuted Heroine.
