During the American Civil War, one of the areas most bitterly fought for was the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia Filled with farms and grain mills, the valley was the Conderacy's major agricultural resource - but also, it stretched for 150 miles, and was the natural route to take to invade the American north. In July of 1964, Confederate General Jubal Early did just that. He led his troops from the valley clear into the suburbs of Washington, DC itself. This daring raid threatened President Lincoln's chances for re-election; so the Union's General Grant launched a campaign to destroy the valley, to cut off its bounty from the Confederacy. This documentary is the story of that dramatic campaign, perhaps the most decisive of the entire war.

The Valley Campaigns Of 1864 were American Civil War operations and battles that took place in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia from May to October 1864. Some military historians divide this period into three separate campaigns: 1) The Lynchburg Campaign (May–June 1864); 2) Early's Washington Raid And Operations Against The B & O Railroad (June–August 1864); and 3) Sheridan's Shenandoah Valley Campaign (August–October 1864) These campaigns interacted and built upon each other, so they are considered together.
