Nathan Hale (June 6, 1755 - September 22, 1776), American Patriot, soldier and spy for the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War was born in Coventry, Connecticut. During the American Revolution, he volunteered for a dangerous spy mission in New York City and was captured by the British on the night of September 21, 1776. Brought before British Gen. William Howe, Hale admitted he was an American officer. Howe ordered him to be hanged the following morning. As Hale mounted the gallows he uttered, "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country." Hale has long been considered an American hero and, in 1985, he was officially designated the state hero of Connecticut.
