A comprehensive film investigation of the July 20th 1944 failed attempt by members of the German military to assasinate Adolf Hitler and to install a democratic government that would have put an end to Germany's involvement in World War II. The trials that immediately followed were filmed for propaganda purposes, but though the films were ordered destroyed just before the war ended by Hitler himself, they had already been captured by the advancing Allies, and these rare films are here shown at length in this documentary, films that provide potent testimony as to the character and motives of the defendants as well as that of the kangaroo court that sentenced nearly all of them to death.

World War II: The 20 July Plot: On July 20, 1944, Adolf Hitler survives an assassination attempt led by German Army Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg. Known as the 20 July Plot or the July 20 Plot, on that date Claus von Stauffenberg and other conspirators attempted to assassinate Adolf Hitler, Fuehrer of Nazi Germany, inside his Wolf's Lair field headquarters near Rastenburg, East Prussia. The name Operation Valkyrie, originally referring to part of the conspiracy, has become associated with the entire event. The apparent purpose of the assassination attempt was to seize political control of Germany and its armed forces from the Nazi Party (including the SS) and to make peace with the western Allies as soon as possible. The underlying desire of many of the involved high-ranking Wehrmacht officers was apparently to show to the world that not all Germans were like Hitler and the Nazi Party. The plot was the culmination of efforts by several groups in the German resistance to overthrow the Nazi German government. The failure of the assassination attempt and the intended military coup d'etat that was to follow led the Gestapo to arrest more than 7,000 people, of whom they executed 4,980.
