As Henry Fonda testifies in the 1962 documentary ''Hollywood: The Fabulous Era'' (which we also sell at this website) on the great films of golden age of cinema, In the controversial film ''White Cargo'', Hedy Lamarr makes a spectacular entrance, and speaks a famous line: "I am Tondelayo!". Though a sparkler of a film during the more sexually permissive times of World War II America, it's then shocking theme of interracial love has not brightened modern screens with its silver magic until now. Ernie Kovacs, ever a one for the witty, was so enamored of the film that he named a seductive imaginary black cat after Tondelayo in his 1952 TV show series with costar Edie Adams - and it was in fact our research into the basis of this character, after learning its source was the movie mentioned in ''Hollywood: The Fabulous Era'' that lead us to seek out and finally release this special film. Based on the 1923 London and Broadway hit stage play penned by Leon Gordon, itself adapted from the 1912 novel ''Hell's Playground'' by Ida Vera Simonton, the film is set during World War II, where flashbacks to 1910 Congo tell the story of a how two white rubber plantation executives fight within a love triangle for the love of Tondelayo, who in the film is half Egyptian and half Arab, rather than black as in either the original book and play, in order not to run afoul of the Hays office ruling that the play was unacceptable material for screen adaptation because of the controversial nature of the subject of love between a black and white person at that time. Now, in an era where the president of the United States is himself the child of a white mother and an African black father, it is well past time for this film to resume receiving the attention and respect that it deserves, as well as the excitement and thrills of an enchanting performance! (1942, Black and White, 1 Hour 28 Minutes).
